“Wonder of the World” by David Lindsay-Abaire
      By Barry Gaines
      For the Journal

My first exposure to the work of playwright David Lindsay-Abaire was the excellent Adobe Theater production of “Rabbit Hole,” his powerful Pulitzer Prize winning play about heartbreak and survival. More of Lindsay-Abaire’s work is on display at the Auxiliary Dog Theatre; his “Wonder of the World” is a consistently hilarious treatment of the same themes of heartbreak and survival.
“Wonder of the World” is a farce, but don’t be fooled into underestimating its impact. The play is seriously funny. Cass and Kip have been married seven years when she discovers her husband’s bizarre sexual fetish (don’t ask). Cass decides to leave him and start a new life with a long wish list of things to do. Brimming with expectation, she is “a tall glass of sparkling cider.”
On the bus to Niagara Falls Cass sits next to Lois, a depressed alcoholic whose husband has left her. Lois is planning suicide and carries her own barrel to Niagara for the job. These two ladies are the yin and yang of marital disillusion and dissolution.
The women share a room; Lois drinks while Cass pursues her “bucket list” that includes seducing Captain Mike, the skipper of the tour boat. They meet Glen and Karla, hired by Kip to find Cass, and screwball events cascade. For example: a marriage councilor dressed as a clown leads a therapeutic “Newlywed Game” to help heal the participants.
Director Becca Holmes, with set designer John van der Meer, has tackled the staging challenges of “Wonder of the World” head on. Andrew McHarney designed the helicopters in flight and Nina Dorrance provided Niagara Falls. Hillary Higgins’ props and Kevin McGuire’s sound contribute as well.
Acting farce requires exquisite timing and sincere commitment. Harry Zimmerman and Marie Benoit as Glen and Karla sometimes try too hard, but Paul Niemi is a believable Cap’n Mike. I have never seen a better loud, blowsy drunk than Kristín Hansen as Lois. She is lush-ious. Kristin Elliott plays several roles including the therapist, and she is funny in each.
As Kip, Nick Lopez walks the tightrope between injured husband and lunatic, and he never falls. My favorite is Amy Suman as Cass. She is the center of the comic maelstrom that swirls around her. We feel with her and for her. The play is a daffy delight.
