      EVENT DETAILS
      Indigenous Peoples Day

Second Saturdays at Casa San Ysidro are free events that explore themes of community, creativity, tradition and innovation. Events include talks, demonstrations and hands-on experiences as well as self-guided tours of the property.

Join us as Santa Ana Pueblo historic preservationist Timothy Menchego and Isleta historian/former Albuquerque Museum docent Rosalee Lucero explore the rich histories, heritage, and traditions that have helped to define our state's identity from different indigenous perspectives.

Earlier this year, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed a bill to officially replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day. This holiday will mark a celebration of New Mexico's 23 sovereign indigenous nations. The importance and effects of indigenous perspectives within museums inform conclusions about the ethical implications inherent within interactions concerning the public. A present day challenge for heritage museums and cultural sites is to consider how these institutions can be used as tools for revitalization. Indigenous modes of analysis that organize local knowledge help to provide a framework for interpreting social events throughout New Mexico’s history.
