Join us as local historian, George Garcia, dives into the history of Spain’s influence on the American Revolution and the incredible life and legacy of Bernardo de Gálvez.

In 1763, Spain traded Florida to the Kingdom of Great Britain for control of Havana, Cuba, which had been captured by the British during the Seven Years' War. Although Spain had refused to ally itself directly with the United States they had supplied the Americans with secret aid and undertook a vigorous military campaign of its own in America under the leadership of Bernardo de Gálvez. When Gálvez was appointed Governor of New Orleans in January 1777, he had helped to expand the supply operation. During the Gulf Coast campaign, Bernardo de Gálvez led Spanish forces into a siege on British troops in Pensacola that secured Spain's conquest of the British province of West Florida. In 1819, after years of negotiations, Secretary of State John Quincy Adams achieved a diplomatic coup with the signing of the Florida Purchase Treaty, which officially put Florida into U.S. hands at no cost beyond the U.S. assumption of $5 million of claims by U.S. citizens against Spain.
