The history of the Tingley Coliseum dates back to the 1916 New Mexico State fair. Due to financial troubles, Albuquerque had to cancel the state fair every year for the next two decades until the Governor Tingley was able to sway federal funds towards the construction of a fairgrounds complex. The Tingley Coliseum became the central aspect of the complex and took two decades to complete! The venue opened its doors in 1957 and has been a central aspect of Albuquerque ever since. The 1957 New Mexico State Fair served as the inaugural event and featured performances by Roy Rogers and Dale Evans.

In 1998, the Tingley Coliseum underwent a $10 million renovation to improve its facilities. For the past fifty years the Tingley Coliseum schedule has featured a variety of events. It was the host of the Albuquerque Thunderbirds of the NBA Development League and the New Mexico Scorpions ice hockey team. It was also host to the Ty Murray Invitational annually from 1998-2008.
